Doing a job you actually like and getting paid for it, isn't easy to achieve, afterall a job is still a job and the grind can make even the best of jobs feel like... well an actual job.
If to achieve that a self employed person decides to work slower, all the better for them (they get more money), and ultimately also for us, works done by people who love what they are doing tend to come out better.

It's what he has said during his Q&As. This is basically his dream game he wanted to make for years but never thought he would get a chance to make.
It's not a beta, he releases episodes of the game. Every episode is a finished product. With betas, they add and change things later on but when he releases an episode, it's done.
Also, if nobody had supported him, Being a DIK would never have existed.

In general comparing VNs to $50 videogames is never going to work, the closest one might get to it is by looking at some indie games on Itch.io (or what used to be Desura), but if you ever followed them you'd know how long those would take to develop.
Any other and faster development process requires more folks, and folks are a cost.

Folks are a cost, and to hire folks you don't just need money: you need to be a charismatic person with management skills.
You need to be willing to delegate, and thus to accept that nobody in the world is going to do something in the exact same way you would have done it.
Let's say that DPC has many other qualities...

- The cost of competent people can be staggering.
- If you don't get competent people the quality will decrese exponentially the more you add to the project.
- Delegating part of your creative process can be good, but also removes a lot of agency on your own project, some understandably don't like it.
All it takes is to be patient, or not and move on.

To be fair the art of delegating is either innate or very hard to master, first trick is to pick the right folks from the get go (which is a challange on its own).
Personally it took me decades to learn how to properly delegate, and only did it due to "circumstances". like it's impossible to run a big team without being able to delegate, then you realize that spending evenings and weekends working on something someone else would be able to do better than sleep deprived you...

This is basically it. He has a vision, he enjoys the work and wants to do it himself.
Time is also a cost. Most often you pay for time. DPC wouldn't have time or money to make a game like Being a DIK without support. Sure, now he has enough money but people chose to continue to support him, nobody forces them.

I can relate.
Personally I would never delegate anything. What's the point in having no boss to tell me what to do and how to do it, if I have to accept that part of the work is done by someone who is not me, and even if better than me he would do it his way, not my way?
I'm not self employed because I don't have the needed skills.
If I were self employed I'd definitely be a solo player, just as DPC is.
